Navigating converging crises is the work of our age.
According to polycrisis researchers, several of these crises will play out at a scale and scope adequate to cause far reaching harm. Many of them are causally entangled too, rendering piecemeal responses ineffective. Reflecting on them collectively—as a metacrisis, as it were—we see that their root causes reach deep into human history. Navigating today's converging crises will require curiosity, compassion, courage, and humility.
We must learn to see our modern world as a complex system, and discern which leverage points are worth investing in. This will require critical thinking—a challenging task in our digital age, one that demands we recognize our biases and explore the landscape of cognitive autonomy.
All of this takes time, effort, and most of all it takes community.
